Turkey Tune Up 2006
Saturday, February 25, 2006 , 9:00AM - 1:00 PM

The yearly "Turkey Tune Up" event is widely attended by southern
California's dedicated turkey hunters. Hunters with valid California
licenses can apply for a chance to purchase one of the available turkey
hunts at the Lake Sutherland property. These exclusive hunts are on
Saturdays and Wednesdays during the spring
bearded turkey season. Winners must be present to win , have
their current California hunting licenses and be a qualified hunter for
the particular hunt they apply for.
Only one entry is permitted per hunter. Winners may choose one hunting
partner that meets the criteria specified in the rules. Lake Sutherland
has reservation fee and a daily hunter fee that must be purchased at
the day of the drawing. This year the reservation fee is $20 and
the $10 for each adult and $5 for juniors.
The activities include various presentations by DFG, NWTF, Turkey
Calling Contests, Turkey shoot contests for shotgun and archery.
Various vendors and exhibits are at the event. Spend some time talking
turkey with other turkey hunters, game wardens and industry pros. There
are many raffle prizes and fund raising events where sportsmen can
contribute to various worthy causes. Food is available at the Lake Sutherland
Consession store.
We have hunted this property a few years ago and we had seen hen
turkeys all around us and one Tom a bit out of range. The first few
hunts seem to have a very
high rate of success. Adult huters will need to select one of two
possible areas to hunt. The common opinion is that the best early pick
would be area "1" . There is a hunt master that will help direct your
hunt and give you helpful information on where to hunt and area
specific rules. Junior hunters and handicapped hunters have
special hunt areas. This is a terrific opportunity for seasoned turkey
hunters and beginners alike.
It's really a good idea to test pattern your turkey shotgun. Each
contestant is given a target and 1 shotgun shell 12 or 20 Ga. for the
contest. This year the 12 ga shell was 1 1/8 oz of #8 shot. (This load
in NOT recommended for hunting turkeys) The targets were about 30 yards
away. The most pellets in the 1" Bullseye wins. The Turkey shoot
begins around 12 noon and this year there was nice prizes for the
winners. This year the Archery contest we won by a woman. She hit the
1" square Orange bullseye almost dead on.Click on her Photo for High
resolution so you can see where she hit.
We look forward to seeing you there next year.
